The London Diaries

Update.

After lunch the girls headed off to do a thorough review of the retail opportunities on the Marylebone High Street. I went walking up the road then through and around Regent’s Park. The mist of the morning had thickened to be dead atmospheric through the park. Didn’t stop people running or walking their dogs and/or children or chaps playing rugger.

After and hour or so of that found my self back on the Marylebone High Street and a great little market behind the parish church. Amongst other things picked up some fully organic beard oil (smells beautifully of spearmint) which as well as making the bristles softer apparently prevents beardruff. Then into the Conrad shop which has wonderful stuff – shame about the limits on baggage on planes. Ran into the “girls”  so we had a drink at the Prince Regent befor heading home.

Earlier today:

So today has dawned a misty sort of day. Being Saturday and all it was a chance for a late start (though I also had one of those yesterday, see below). Ju and Sare went to the supermarket of something. I ambled over to the Marylebone High Street to pick up some items on order then down to Oxford Street. Popped into Selfridges. Checked out the luggage section which is a bit of a mission of mine. Still to find the ideal carry on bag for me – think I found it but do I want to pay that much I ask. Then up to the menswear section. Though I might replace my Just Jeans cheapie with a quality pair. Saw some nice looking ones. They started at a size 28. Who ever knew that was a size? In boys wear maybe but menswear? Real men’s sizes on the bottom shelf in the corner. Couldn’t be bothered. Surveyed the Technology section and weirdly there was nothing that I thought I really needed. By this time my usual commitment to retail activity flagged I think in part this is due that the shop is so overheated. Drains you of commitment.

So wandered further up Oxford Street, then up past Portman Square (key holders only) and home for a cuppa and a Tesco’s mince pie – yummy.

So thats today so far.

Yesterday.

Sare headed to work (lucky girl) and Ju headed off on the last school visit of her fellowship. I lay in bed and finished a book. Eventually up and out. Over to Marylebone High St to finalise soome Christmas gifts. Then over to Oxford St, New Bond St, Hanover Square, Regent St, Piccadilly Circus, Pall Mall and onto Trafalgar Square. The latter I have to say was looking a bit scruffy – too many tourists! Then worked my way back towards the Palladium. Loitered in Libertys for a while then met Ju at the Palladium. Bite to eat then in for the show.

When we were looking at shows to go to in London we looked at the Panto but decided good seat were too expensive. But then when Ju couldn’t decide on a birthday present I decided tickets to the Panto would be a good choice. It was a brilliant choice! With a cast including  Julian Clary, Paul O’Grady, Amanda Holden and Nigel Havers it seemed a safe bet. So much laughter. Julian Clary’s talent for double entendre – scripted and unscripted – was on full display. No money had been spared on costumes. Again Julian Clary was a star – lost count of how many costumes he had – must have been well over 20. Must have been some well drilled costumers out the back as they had some very quick changes with often elaborate costumes. And of course the was the necessary audience participation. By. The end my voice was a bit shot.

One highlight was sitting next to a sullen youth who was clearly there under sufferance with his mother. Barely cracked a smile through the entire performance. Hilarious in itself!

After the show we met Sare at Libertys then wandered home to take in the lights. Fish and Chips at the Golden Hind (mine was actually calamari and greek salad). Great day.
