Granada

This will get added to over the next couple of days

But first, a musical interlude:

Arrived at our hotel in Granada just on 3:00 pm after an uneventful bus trip from Malaga. Hour and half. Continuing mist and rain obscured the hilly terrain behind Malaga. But cleared as we got closer to Granada. Lots of the expected Olive groves. The soil that had been tilled looked pretty hard work to my expert eye.

Taxi ride from the bus station to our hotel. A comfortable small hotel on the Plaza de la Trinidad. Tree filled plaza with a band playing.

Got sorted and went walking. The Cathedral of the Incarnation is just around the corner. It’s vast. Started building it in 1518 and carried for for some time….lashings of gold work, two organs, lots of side chapels, illuminated manuscripts, vestments, art works…..

From the Cathedral we walked through markets found La Madraza de Granada which was founded in 1349 as a university by the then Sultan. Across the road is the entrance to the Capilla Royal – Chapel Royal. It contains the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella whose conquest of Granada in 1492 finally brought all of Spain under their most catholic rule. Also the tombs of their daughter Joanna of Castile and her husband Philip the Handsome. She is more commonly known at Juana la Loca as she went crazy after Philips death in 1507 and spent most of the rest of her life confined to a nunnery.

Found an amazing shop with wonderful dried fruits, tea mixes, coffee, chocolate. Yummy.

Little rest up at the hotel then out for dinner. We are quite unfashionable dining at 7:30. People were bringing small children in at that time. Never mind. Delicious. The food that is. Not the children. They were more annoying.
