So after a reasonable night’s sleep (initially trying the natural remedy approach, then knocking back a chemical assistance around 1:30 a.m.) it was time to get out and about.
Well, weren’t exactly rushing. Rugged up and headed out about 10:00. First stop the Skechers shop where I invested in a good pair of boots – good and light but rugged enough for winter. It was only 3 degrees and drizzly when we headed out so felt the need to upgrade.
Checked out Piccadilly station where I pick up my car tomorrow. Ever the boy scout, be prepared and all that. Its only 10 – 15 minute walk from the hotel.
Wandered the streets. Lots of Victorian (I guess) brick buildings. Checked out a shopping centre. Had forgotten to bring my man bag with me so had to buy another. Actually ended up buying two. As you do! Got a large one which will be brill on planes to take all my necessities and also to equate to the handbag which women are allowed in addition to their carry on bag. Many of which seem as large as the actual carry on bag. So another victory for equity.
Ended up, without any forward planning on my part, at Manchester Cathedral. Not a huge building in comparison to others we’ve seen – initially it was a parish church begin in 1421 – though earlier ones had been on the site. Didn’t actually become a cathedral until 1843. Has some spectacular new stained glass windows – all the old ones were blown out when a corner of the cathedral was hit by a bomb during WW2. The same corner was damaged in a 1996 IRA bombing.
Lunch in the Old Wellington a genuine tudor half timbered building built in 1553. Scottish venison pie washed down by heather ale.
After that it was a wander back to the hotel for a bit of a rest (sleep). Went for a wander around the Christmas market which offered up a huge variety of food (much of it from across the channel). Limited myself to a mug of traditional mulled wine.
Tomorrow, I’m off to Marsden to stay with my aunt and uncle while Julia does some school visits.
